VRCE/VNIT Golden Jubilee

Submitted by asang on 26 December, 2010 - 08:16

Yesterday was a memorable day. Golden Jubilee of VRCE/VNIT was celebrated at Nagpur with immense energy and nostalgia that is typical of Alumni events. However, what makes this event special was the range of disciplines from in which people have worked over last 50 years. Every batch between 1961 and 2010 was represented at the event. The number of registrations far exceeded the expectations of organizers. Lot of credit goes to organizers who went out of the way to please some of the oldies with things like Bullock cart, Horse Carriage, a truck full of oranges to greet with visitors in Orange City and so on. After the brief inaugural address by Dr. Moghe the current director, 10 Distinguished Alumni were honoured by the past Directors of the institute. The youngest recipient was Dr. B. S. Murty from Micro-Nano research group at IIT Madras. He is a 1986 batch passout. In the morning, everyone had informal meeting with old and new friends. The evening venue was Jamtha Lawns. The arrangements there were equally grand with college band providing live entertainment. Many Alumni had brought their families. The college teachers and staff were also in high spirits and everyone enjoyed the show and carried home unforgettable memories to cherish.

Looking back at my 15 years after leaving VRCE, I can recall the inspiration I got from my friends and teachers during those days. Although I couldn't meet all of them yesterday, but it was enough to fill my heart with a sense of pride and gratitude for being part of such an institution.

Cloud Computing - Is It Good For You

Submitted by asang on 4 December, 2010 - 16:43

Today, Cloud Computing has become one of the most hotly spoken about topics in most IT seminars and CIO circles. In last 4-5 years, most large internet companies in the US and elsewhere have stoked the Cloud Computing story and have tried very hard to convince "not so large" companies how it makes sense to them. Interestingly, these same companies were equally adroit in telling the same customers benefits of their own data-centers and inhouse infrastructure.

Sometimes I feel that what is happening in cyberspace is not unlike what is happening in "brick and mortor" space. Large companies are simply constructing "Infrastructure" or trying to sell their "unused" capacity for which they have no utilization plans of their own. Amazons, Microsofts and Yahoos of the world seem to have lost it when it comes to providing thought and technology leadership. This role is being increasingly provided by proponents of Open Source Software across the world. Large technology companies have become barren farmlands without any real commitment towards their customers' problems and solving them. But putting out their own infrastructure on the block, they are simply doing what DLFs, Unitechs and other real estate companies are doing in "brick and mortor" world.

The Wall Street

Submitted by asang on 25 January, 2009 - 12:49
Today I watched the 1987 movie Wall Street starring Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen. I think this is a film every would be engineer in India should watch. The reason I say this is simple. Many of them are attracted to a glamourous career in finance industry - be in students from IITs, NITs or other institutions. In the process they hardly realize what they are heading for.
